Bairnswear 57: Great vintage knitting pattern baby underwear 1930s. Vest in three styles, pilch or pants in three styles, petticoat in two styles and bodice in two styles. Great little additions to a retro wardrobe for baby or large doll.1st and 2nd sizes, birth up to I year. Worked in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply or modern 3[ply for a smaller size. To fit large baby doll just use modern 3ply and size 11 (3mm) needles - will then fit large pedigree baby, prem or any of the larger dolls. Fabulously retro pattern.

vintage baby vets knitting pattern from 1910 Beryl 565-322 Vests: Great vintage knitting pattern for really early vests probably around 1910 or earlier. They are both knitted in vintage 2ply which would be similar to modern 3ply. They are knitted on size 11 (3mm) and it is suggested for a larger size to change needle size to 10. These can also be knitted in silk. Three needles are required for one on the left and is knitted in a rib, then a wave pattern fro top ans sleeves edges. The one on the right is knitted in garter stitch and is for a tiny baby and is edged in crochet shells or you could pick up stitches and make a picot edge.

The pattern says due to wartime economies the government were advice these bodice set to take place of petticoats that took more wool or more material.

Bestway 1058: Great vintage knitting pattern for baby boys romper and vest set 1930s. This is a pre war little pattern for a classic button top romper with sleeves - not that different from the little onesies seen now. The vest has little sleeves and drawstring neck and the pilch or knickers have a simple crochet at legs - can be replaced with knitted rib or picot edge if liked.  to fit 19 inch chest 6-12 months. Romper is worked in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply or for a smaller size stay with modern 3ply. Vest set is in vintage 2ply which knits as modern 3ply.  More romper patterns coming soon.

Bestway 1094: Great baby vest knitting pattern from 1940s. This little wartime gem is for three different style vest to fit 1-12 months. These were essential when there was no central heating. I remember knitting 6 little vests all different for my first baby in the 1960s - we had not heating only a living room fire. I will have some hand knitted vest for sale later in the summer ready for our lovely British winter. Each of these can be made from less than 50g ball of wool, cotton or synthetic yarn or for real luxury - cashmere! They will fit between 16 and 18 inches as they will stretch.

Ladyship 351: Great vintage baby knitting pattern for undies early 1930's. This is another very early, simple to knit set, actually says on the pattern designed  for beginners. Pattern is knit one row and K1, P1 the next! There are instructions for a simple vest with long sleeves to fit 15-18 inch chest, first size vest with shoulder buttons to fit 14-16 inch chest, a body belt - to keep baby extra warm, bootees and gloves (the pattern on the gloves and bootee tops is the same as the dress on the pattern below) vintage 3ply is used, so try using smaller needles for smaller sizes and lager needles for larger sizes - this is actually suggested in the pattern. Ladyship 3080: Stunning knitting pattern from 1940s for babies and toddles vests. This one has instructions for three styles and to fit two sizes. To fit 18 and 20 inch for the sleeveless vest. Boys vest with sleeves is to fit 20 and 22 inch chest and the other sleeveless vest is to fit 22 and 24 inch chest. Knitted in vintage 3ply, try modern 3ply for this one. Smaller size is knitted in less the 50g, the bigger ones in just over 50g. Always work a tension square.

Lavenda 850-2uw: Great vintage underwear knitting pattern for baby from 1940s. This set is unusual, the pilch is in the style of a nappy and is knitted in a triangle with reinforced flannel fabric at each corner to tack pins or you could make button holes in two and sew a button on the third - this works as I made some like this for my first daughter. Vest fastens with bows top and mid way - again buttons can be used. Always work a tension square, try modern 4ply for these. I made these for my 24 inch baby doll from the 1930s and they worked a treat.

The rib vest is in 3 sizes slim fitting for warmth to fit 16-18 inch chest (will stretch) and the little wrap over to fit 14-16 inches for newborn. The button up bodice with belt to fit new born and the plain button bodice to fit 18 inch chest. There are three styles of pilch, elasticated rib, ribbon tie rib and the wrap over to match the bodices. They were warn for extra warm and to add good posture when baby began to sit up (Victoria and Edwardian sources) More often than not crochet for extra support, but knitted ones were also worn and patterns are available. WK476-11 Baby Combinations: Great vintage baby knitting pattern for combinations from 1920s. Called thus because the combine the vest and pants, ha! This little set could easily be transformed in to an all in one baby gro type of sleep suit or play suit by extending legs and sleeves. Easy to knit, to fit around 12 months knitted in 4ply and are knitted in stocking stitch. Use baby 3ply for a smaller fit at chest, the knitted to instruction will probably be about 18-19 inch chest.

Weldon 351uw: Great vintage baby vest and pilch set knitting pattern from 1940s. This little set is to fit 6-12 months and 1-2 years. Knitted in vintage 2ply that might knit better in modern 3ply - the vest is classic rib and the knickers are in stocking stitch the tie waist. Always work a tension square.

This one is from the1940's and knitted in 3ply, always try a tension square when knitting these vintage patterns as old wool and needles differ from modern ones.
